      <image:title>Home - About Drinking Gourd Farms</image:title>
<image:caption>Drinking Gourd Farms is building a community of politically-aligned Black farmers, gardeners, and homesteaders in Arizona that are focused on the physical, mental, and spiritual health of Black people through movement building, agriculture, health and wellness, and environmental stewardship. Members of Drinking Gourd Farms are developing a collective food sovereignty practice across Phoenix fields, backyards, vacant lots, apartment balconies, and public spaces. We are securing independent, community determined healthy food sources that liberate Black people from the industrialized food system.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Home - Our Leaders</image:title>
<image:caption>Drinking Gourd Farms is led by an intergenerational group of Black Muslim refugee mothers. Our leaders engage in a healing justice framework that is part political strategy and part wellness practice. Members are responding to generational trauma and contemporary violence with emergent, collective practices centered in wellness.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In response to COVID-19, we are meeting the critical need for food for those Black people most at-risk (elders, houseless folks, people with pre-existing health issues, and poor people) by delivering free food boxes full of fresh organic fruits and vegetables grown by Black farmers and gardners.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Vision - Drinking Gourd Farms is guided by 4 principles:</image:title>
<image:caption>Healthy, culturally appropriate food is a human right for Black people. We know that. We don’t have to explain it to ourselves. We do have to declare it to the corporations, the politicians, the nonprofits, and America’s white supremacist mainstream culture. They are the ones that are targeting our community with food that is killing us and profiting from an industrialized food system that continues to steal our labor. We must build Black power in order to create the space for sovereign food sources, reduce current harms, and dismantle the existing food system that is an extension of white settler colonialism. Black people must ensure our own fresh, nutritious food alternatives that are independent of the industrialized food system that is killing and oppressing us. That means controlling our own destiny and determining our own future as Black communities through healing, organizing, and resistance. Collective Black land ownership and stewardship as a politically radical practice is critical to securing Black liberation and building an equitable, sustainable food system.</image:caption>
